Getting Started

If you are just beginning to address occupational driving risk, there are three good options for you. You could:

·  arrange to host an Occupational Driving Safety Seminar or Benchmarking Workshop with representatives from other organisations,

·  arrange for an internal workshop that enables you and other colleagues in your organisation to learn about the major occupational driving risks, and how to identify them, as well as solutions that have been shown to be effective, or

·  engage Fleet Safety Solutions to conduct a diagnostic review of your current situation and practices.

Driving Safety Seminars (series)

A series of seminars on occupational driving safety involving people from a variety of organisations enables you to learn about best practices and exchange experiences with other organisations. This is a unique opportunity to hear about effective practices in improving safety and, at the same time, discuss realities of implementing good practices in large and medium sized organisations. Seminars described below are conducted in Melbourne and Sydney and, by arrangement in other locations.

  1. Occupational Driving Safety (Half Day) - This Seminar gives an overview of the problem of occupational driving crashes, the crash and injury factors involved and methods of analysing these factors, as well as discussing what can be done to reduce these risks in an organisational setting.
  2. Risk Behaviour and Driver Training (Half Day) - Many employers turn to driver training as the solution to driver crash risk. Many are disappointed with the results. This Seminar looks at what's good, and not so good about driver training courses - and how to leverage best safety benefit out of investment in driver training/education.
  3. Achieving a Cultural Shift (Half Day) - This Seminar looks at ways of making driving safety a top-of-mind priority throughout the organisation. Communication is always a challenge in large disperse organisations. We draw from effective and not-so-effective social marketing campaigns to explore ways to marketing driving safety within the organisation.
  4. Policy Development and Management/Employee Accountability (Half Day) - Rules, sanctions and incentives are important elements in occupational driving safety. This Seminar explores good processes and pitfalls in developing policy and setting in place systems of accountability.
  5. Behavioural Change How to Achieve it (Half Day) - This seminar examines models of behaviour change, the research on effective road safety interventions, and practical organisational experience in changing employee driving behaviour. It looks at the problems of complacency, bravado, habitual unsafe driving, and rules/legislative compliance.
  6. Fleet Safety Benchmarking Workshop (Full Day) - This Seminar closely examines current real life case studies of good practice in fleet safety and encourages comparative self-assessment against key elements of managing safety in an organisation. It provides the first step in an ongoing process of practical evaluation of your systems and programs and fosters continuous improvement.

Occupational Driving Safety Workshop (in-house)

An internal workshop for key people within the organisation who have a role in human resource policy, safety or fleet management, to explain the essential elements of good occupational driving safety practices. We will lead your team through an interactive process that communicates good practice whilst also identifying critical risks and likely solutions to help take your organisation forward. We can also complement this workshop with more in-depth programs to educate your managers on fleet safety practices.

Driver Safety Management System Review

An overall review of your data, policies and practices is undertaken to identify the things that can be strengthened to achieve sustained safety outcomes. Working with your specialists in OHS, fleet and risk management we will also involve some of your operational representatives to help your organisation determine where existing practices can be improved. We can then provide advice on making the key changes to your systems to ensure your organisation adopts those practices that will make a real difference to safety and cutting of driving safety related costs.

Depending on your needs, the consultants will advise of the changes needed to achieve optimal policy frameworks, as well as to consult and negotiate with others in the organisation that should be involved in these changes.

Fleet Safety Manual     A manual can be prepared to suit your organization.  The manual will provide a guide for individuals in your organization who have a role in carrying out responsibilities for managing various aspects of fleet safety consistent with best practice to meet duty of care in relation to occupational driving.

Driver Safety Handbook    A driver safety handbook can be prepared to give your employees outlining their responsibilities for safe driving and vehicle maintenance.  It would also give them specific advice on driving and road injury risks and how to manage these.
